October sees the UK celebrate Black History Month and in honour of this we’ve rounded up some of our favourite flicks:
Get out
Chris meets his girlfriend’s parents for the first time, but their superficial, warm welcome develops into something more sinister. He uncovers a series of unnerving events and racist behaviour that lead to a frightening and enraging story. Daniel Kaluuya gives the performance of his life in this Oscar-winning horror, it’s one that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Black Panther
This film was 20 years in the making and is one to be enjoyed with all the family. After the death of his Father, T’Challa takes his place as King of Wakanda. Drawn into battle against evil, he must join forces with the surrounding tribes to defeat his enemies and protect the nation’s people and secrets. We love the cool costumes and the tale of family and friendship; the film has taken the world by storm… “Wakanda Forever!”
Moonlight
This inspiring story is one that shies away from stereotypes and made history in 2017, as the first LGBTQ+ film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. The coming-of-age story follows a young man Juan, at three stages in his life as he confronts his identity, sexuality and adulthood while living in a dysfunctional home. Singer Janelle Monáe joins the cast in her first feature film as Teresa and features in our other pick Hidden Figures.
Hidden Figures
This powerful adaptation tells the story of the pioneering women working at NASA during its infancy. They broke free of the stereotype that existed for black women at that time, and in the process became the brains of the largest operation in history, sending astronaut John Glenn into orbit. Powerful, intelligent women pack a punch in this inspiring history lesson and its one that gives us that girl power feeling!
Ray
This Oscar-winning biopic depicts the life of rhythm and blues legend Ray Charles and how he found a gift for playing the piano, amid a family tragedy. From losing his sight at the age of seven to his difficult upbringing and drug addiction, Charles battled many demons during his rise to success in the 1950s and 1960s. If you enjoyed musical biopics like What’s Love Got to Do With it and Walk the Line, then you’ll love this one too.
Creed
Apollo Creed attempts to follow in his Father’s footsteps to become a boxing legend in his own right with help from his Father’s best friend Rocky. Apollo learns the ropes and his career takes shape in preparation for the biggest fight of his life. This is a great watch for boxing fans out there and a chance to see legend Sylvester Stallone as Rocky once more on the big screen.
